Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef Make sure to break up the beef while browning.
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, chopped Can be substituted with roasted red peppers for sweetness.
  • 1 cup ketchup Consider using barbecue sauce for a smoky flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Ensure it’s gluten-free if needed.
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 pieces hamburger buns Substitute with gluten-free buns if desired.

Method

Cooking the Beef Mixture
  1. In your slow cooker, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, and green bell pepper. Cook on high for about 4 hours, or low for 6-8 hours, until the beef is browned and fully cooked through.
  2. Once the beef is cooked, drain any excess fat to keep your sloppy joes from being too greasy.
  3. To the beef mixture, add ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together until well combined.
  4. Cover the slow cooker and let the mixture cook for an additional hour on low.
  5. Serve the mixture hot on hamburger buns.

Notes

Pair with crispy coleslaw or sweet potato fries for a delicious side. Consider toppings like pickles, shredded cheese, or sautéed mushrooms for added flavor.
